- Give them leftovers. Save on pet food and give them the food you don’t want to eat.
- Don’t go to a groomer. Bathe and groom your own pet.
- Any pet toy will work, your dog doesn’t care if it’s an expensive fancy toy.
- Don’t buy expensive pet food. Your pet doesn’t mind, they’ll like the food no matter the price.
- Spay and neuter your pets. This is an expense, but it’s cheaper than raising a few new puppies.

Be careful when feeding human food to animals. Their systems are different than ours and some foods we love can be toxic to dogs. For instance, chocolate will cause liver damage, onions and the like are bad for them. Consult the internet for safe foods for your dogs to eat. Don’t give them fatty foods unless you want to end up with a diabetic animal or fatty-liver animal on your hands. Be careful with cheap foods, too much corn isn’t good. Better to buy a better brand (store is usually okay) and do your own add ins. My daughter in law makes “dog soup” to add flavor to their dry food, they love it! She mixes rice with either egg yoks (saved for her by a cholesterol watcher) and carrots, peas, green beans. The dogs love it, adds flavor. No salt please. You really have to be careful; feeding pets is not like slopping hogs from the table. Consult your vet. Or the internet if your vet pushes a certain brand. Ask a dog rescue or cat rescue person. They are in the know and can give you hints on inexpensive but nutritious foods. Try this website:www.aide4animals.rescuegroups.org
I just wanted to add that I killed one of our pets once, a little gerbil that was so cute. I didn’t know he needed pellets, I just fed him lettuce like somebody said, and it was cheap and it killed, gave him a lethal case of wettail! (diarrhea). Poor little thing; we had a funeral service for him in the backyard and my little kids (little at that time) cried. I never let them know it was my fault; I didn’t research what the animal was supposed to eat. A case of trying to save a penny, losing a dollar.
Here I go again – one more idea; the best toy your dog (especially) can have is an old dirty sock of their master’s — two of them knotted together make a perfect toy. They love it, toss it up, chew it and sometimes sleep with it! And kitties love a catnip ball on a string. Grow catnip in your backyard (very easy) or actually any of the mints will work, dry it, make a little sack from a child’s sock or something like that, fill it with the nip and tie a string on it. Your cat will love their new “mouse” especially if it moves from a seemingly invisible source (like you who has put the string under a chair) with the mouse in sight of the cat and it starts to move.
Well, that’s all for now. I’ll shut up.
Those are some good points, thanks for sharing your advice.
